All 5 Lapland airports, four of them with rental desks: Rovaniemi (RVN), Kittilä (KTT), Ivalo (IVL) and Kemi-Tornio (KEM). Enontekiö (ENF): nearest pickup is Kittilä.
Pick up your rental car directly at the terminal. Compare what's available at each of Lapland's five airports before booking.
Allow 30–45 minutes for rental counter paperwork on arrival, especially in peak season.
Most companies let you complete paperwork before arrival. Upload your licence at home to save 15–20 min.
Call or email the day before to confirm your reservation and that an SUV/4WD is ready, not an economy car.
Lapland sees many late charter flights. Check counter hours, not all are 24/7. Sixt and Hertz have the best late-night coverage.
Gateway to: Santa Village, Levi, Saariselkä
The main international gateway to Finnish Lapland. RVN handles about a million passengers a year, with peak traffic in December–January. All major rental companies have airport counters here.
Christmas season (Dec 20–Jan 6): expect 30–40 min delays at rental counters. Pre-register online to skip paperwork.
Gateway to: Levi, Pallas-Yllästunturi NP
Kittilä is the ski-resort airport of Lapland, serving Levi, Finland's largest ski resort. It receives many direct charter flights from Western Europe during ski season (Feb–Apr).
Ski season (Feb–Apr): very busy. One-way rentals from RVN to KTT are popular. Confirm the one-way fee when booking.
Gateway to: Saariselkä, Inari, Urho Kekkonen NP
The northernmost major airport in Finland. IVL serves the northern wilderness, ideal base for Saariselkä, Inari lake and Urho Kekkonen National Park. Fewer rental options but excellent local service.
Limited options at IVL, book early. If your preferred company has no IVL desk, consider flying into RVN and driving north.
Gateway to: Pallas-Yllästunturi NP, Hetta fells
The most remote commercial airport in Finland. ENF operates seasonal flights and handles modest passenger volumes. It's the gateway to the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and the Hetta Sámi community.
No on-site rental desks. Arrange transport with local transfer providers 2+ weeks in advance, book via Enontekiö tourist info.
Gateway to: Kemi SnowCastle, Sea-Lapland coast, Sweden border
Southernmost Lapland airport, serving the Sea-Lapland coast (Kemi, Tornio, Haparanda). Closer to road connections into Sweden than the inland airports, useful if you plan a Bothnian Bay road trip or a SnowCastle visit.
Outside Helsinki–Kemi flight times the rental desks may close; book a pickup time within 30 min of your arrival flight or pre-arrange a key drop with the operator.
