Lapland Driving Routes & Itineraries, Arctic Road Trips

Popular driving routes in Finnish Lapland: Aurora Highway, Rovaniemi to Levi, Husky Triangle, and more. Distances, times, highlights, and driving tips.

Curated drives from family Christmas circuits to Aurora Highway journeys of over 450 km to the Norwegian border, with the detours locals actually take.

All distances from Rovaniemi. Winter driving times add 25–40%.

Take Road 79 north via Kittilä for the scenic route. Add 30 mins for stops. Watch for reindeer at dusk, they cannot be predicted.

This is the ultimate Lapland road trip. Split into two days with an overnight in Inari. The stretch from Ivalo to Utsjoki is the most dramatic.

This loop is perfect as a full-day adventure from Rovaniemi. Most husky farms require advance booking but welcome drive-by visitors in winter.

The road quality drops north of Ivalo in heavy snow. 4WD strongly recommended. Saariselkä sits at 300 m elevation, expect colder temps and more snow.

Check your rental agreement, not all Lapland cars are permitted into Norway. Inform the rental company in advance. Road 92 via Karigasniemi is the most popular crossing.

Perfect for families with children. Santa Village is about 2.5 km from RVN airport (8 km from the city centre), many visitors go straight there on arrival day. Add the Arctic Zoo for a full day.
