Renting a Car for Ruska: Lapland’s Autumn Colour Road Trip
Ruska is the Finnish word for the autumn colour, the short window when birch, aspen and dwarf shrub turn yellow, orange and deep red before the first snow. It runs roughly from the first week of September in the far north to early October around Rovaniemi, moving south as the cold does. For a self-drive it is arguably the best season of the year: the whole road network is still open, the light is long and low instead of gone, the biting insects of July are finished, and rental fleets sit between the summer peak and the December surge. Ruska is driven by night length and the first frosts, so it arrives in the north first and rolls south over about a month. As a planning rule: the fells around Kilpisjärvi and Utsjoki usually peak in the first half of September; Saariselkä, Inari and Ivalo around mid-September; Levi, Ylläs and Sodankylä in the second half of the month; and the forests around Rovaniemi and the Arctic Circle into early October.
The colour on open fell tops (the treeless dwarf-birch and blueberry heath) turns first and most intensely, then the birch forest below. If you want the classic red-and-gold fell, aim high and early; if you want golden forest roads, aim lower and later. Because the peak only lasts a week or two in any one place, keep your plan loose and let the frost forecast pull you north or south by a day or two.
Ruska is a dispersed, off-the-schedule experience. The best colour is on fell roads, lake shores and trailheads that buses do not serve and that are empty in September now that the summer hikers have gone home. A car lets you chase a frost line, stop at a roadside ruska viewpoint the moment the light is right, and reach trailheads for Pallas-Yllästunturi or Urho Kekkonen National Park at dawn.
It is also the cheapest driving month after mid-April. A compact SUV from Rovaniemi airport runs roughly €45 to €65 a day in September, well under the December rate, and fuel-cost-per-kilometre is at its lowest because the cars are still on summer tyres. Compare a few pickups before you commit.
Here is the thing to plan around. In September most fleet cars are still on summer tyres, which is fine for the daytime driving that ruska is built around. But the first hard frost in the north can come in the last week of the month, and a frosty fell road at seven in the morning on summer rubber is genuinely slippery.
Two practical moves: drive the higher fell roads mid-day once the frost has lifted, and if your trip runs into the last days of September at high latitude, ask the rental desk whether early-winter or friction tyres are available as an add-on. Winter tyres become mandatory only when winter conditions require them (typically from November), so in ruska season it is a judgement call, not a legal one. Days 1–2 · Rovaniemi base: pick up at RVN, ease into the golden forest roads along the Ounasjoki and Kemijoki river valleys.
Days 3–4 · North to Sodankylä and Saariselkä: the fell colour intensifies; walk a short section of the UKK trailheads at first light.
Day 5 · Inari and Lake Inari shore: reflection photography on still mornings, Sámi cultural stops in the village.
Days 6–7 · Loop back via Pyhä-Luosto: old-growth spruce and amethyst fells before returning the car to RVN.
September fleets are smaller than midsummer, so SUV and estate inventory does thin out on popular pickup dates, but two to three weeks of lead time is usually enough.
