Full comparison of car rental companies in Lapland: Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, and local operators. Airport availability, fleet, pricing, winter readiness.
Every major car rental company in Finnish Lapland: which airports each one serves, where the city pickup points are, and what to check before you book.
Checked against each operator's own station pages in August 2026: all five majors run desks at all three Lapland airports. Block heaters, studded winter tires and third-party liability are market standard. What actually changes your trip is price and available cars on your dates, and that is exactly what the search compares.

Measured from the live comparison on 9 Aug 2026: cheapest total per class, 4 rental days from Rovaniemi Airport, taxes and fees included. September dates 23–27 Sep, December dates 11–15 Dec. Prices move daily, so run your own dates.
Cheapest total per class on the day we checked. Winter scarcity is real: in December a mini can cost more than an economy car, and full-size 4WDs close to triple.

Second opinion: no broker stocks every desk. Our August sample above had no Hertz or Avis at all, while DiscoverCars' Rovaniemi panel lists both, plus eleven others, with free-cancellation rates marked. Run the same dates through it before you decide:
Our price comparison (EconomyBookings) shows what its broker partners actually stock at your airport for your dates. The supplier mix changes daily, if a chain is missing, run the same dates through the second comparison below.
Real offers from our price comparison at the Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo airports, captured 9 Aug 2026. Each link opens the same search with the same airport and dates; prices are 4-day totals with taxes included, and they move daily.
Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt all list desks at Ivalo Airport, and local operator MABI Mobility (formerly Scandia Rent) reaches Ivalo too. Fleets are small and book out fast for Christmas and aurora season, so reserve 6–8 weeks ahead, longer for the December peak. Enontekiö has no on-airport desks; the nearest pickup is Kittilä Airport.
Budget markets itself as the price-conscious pick of the majors, and it lists desks at all three Lapland airports, not just Rovaniemi. In the comparison it appears only when the broker carries its cars for your dates, so check both the results and Budget's own site. For a late-evening arrival, confirm counter hours before you book.
All five list SUV and 4WD classes in Lapland, but what is on the lot changes week to week. For remote routes, filter the search for 4WD or AWD and book early: rental desks guarantee a vehicle class, not a specific model.
Major brands staff their counters for arrivals in peak season, but hours vary, so confirm for late flights. If your arrival runs past closing time, arrange a key handover with the operator in advance.
Finnish law requires winter tires Nov 1 – Mar 31 whenever weather or road conditions demand it, which in a Lapland winter means effectively the whole window. Every rental runs winter tires in season. Studded tires are permitted in the same window and are standard in proper winter season.
Plugged in at parking spots overnight. Prevents oil from freezing and makes morning startup easy even at -30°C.
Mandatory by Finnish law and included in all rentals. Covers damage to other vehicles and property.
Usually included but with excess (€800–€2500). Check if your travel insurance or credit card covers the excess.
Most reputable Lapland rental cars include ice scraper, snow brush, traction sand bag and jump-start cables.
Not always included, request it at booking or use Google Maps offline. Finnish roads are well mapped.
Book at least 6–8 weeks ahead for Christmas season (Dec 20 – Jan 6)
Always choose a 4WD or AWD vehicle if visiting Nov–March
Check if your credit card includes CDW excess insurance
Compare total price with and without CDW waiver upgrade
Request a car with engine block heater explicitly
Photograph every scratch and dent BEFORE driving away
Ask about one-way rental fees if flying into Rovaniemi and out of Kittilä
One of the biggest global rental names. In Lapland, Hertz lists desks at all three airports, pickup at Rovaniemi railway station and in the city centre, and an office at Levi.
